A collection of main menus for John Wayne's official R1 DVDs. Included is the disc's mastering date, which of course will always precede the street date. A real anomaly is 3 Godfathers, which took over two years to get released on R1 but was released on R2 almost immediately. Release dates are the most common method for documenting the origins of DVDs, but mastering dates make more sense, especially since packaging, disc art and catalog numbers change or vary for what is a DVD's true origins underneath. Mastering dates are based on a DVD's UDF 1.02 file system date and time stamp. Nero Info Tool and DVDInfoPro can access this information, which at times can vary a number of days from the various files in the VIDEO_TS folder. The UDF time and date stamp, of which only one exists, reflects when a DVD's image was rendered for subsequent creation to a glass master for replication, or duplication in the case of a made-on-demand DVD-R. Known to be missing is the mastering date for the 1997 release of The Searchers. This title is hard to track down because the 2002 version in my collection has a 1997 copyright on the packaging, making it 'hit or miss' to purchase the original from sites like eBay because there is no way to externally identify the two versions. Existing masters are sometimes updated with minor additions and then carry a different date. Warner Bros. has done this with the initial versions of The Searchers, The Green Berets, and How the West Was Won. The latter for instance has exactly the same print and its encoding, special features and menu for the 1998 and 2002 versions, but the newer one is also coded for R4, has a Warner Bros. intro instead of MGM and has a different copyright warning. This practice of modifying existing masters, however, is uncommon. Menus are captured in the square-pixel equivalents of exactly what are on the DVDs. This is worth noting since many of the Olive menu images were authored incorrectly, creating slight 'squeeze' aberrations because the non-square pixel nature of DVD has not been compensated. Olive's Blu-ray menus, which have the same images as their DVD counterparts, do not suffer from this distortion. Motion menus are accompanied with three animated circles to denote the image presented will vary depending on the juncture. Titles first released in a compilation and subsequently released solo are included in the gallery. All video supplements are 4x3 or letterbox, or a combination thereof, unless noted as 16x9. Disc types: SS-SL: single-sided, single-layer; SS-DL: single-sided, dual-layer; DS-SL: double-sided, single-layer; DS-DL: double-sided, dual-layer; DS-SL+DL: double-sided, single-layer + dual-layer. DVDs with a JACKET_P folder are noted. This somewhat obscure feature, part of the DVD specification, supported by few players and studios, will display a 4x3 image—one of three of the same in different sizes—when a film is stopped or in a multi-disc player. Warner Bros. makes extensive use of JACKET_P and to a lesser degree, MGM.
Another seldom seen aspect of DVD, also noted, is parental control, whereby a disc can be authored with a rating which is read and compared to the player's setup. If activated and there is a rating mismatch, the player will prompt for a password to allow access. Only Universal and Fox have used this feature for John Wayne's titles, although Fox inconsistently. Most DVDs in general are not authored with parental control.
DVD artwork, design elements and heralds are copyrighted by their respective owners. |

Angel and the Badman Before the film was officially released on R1 in 2013 by Olive Films, almost all other DVDs were more or less of substandard quality except the UK version released by Universal in 2004. Like all my PAL to NTSC conversions, AviSynth was used to generate a 23.97 fps progressive master in the lossless Lagarith codec format. With a bare minimum of filtering the master was encoded to DVD-R using 3:2 pulldown flags and a high bitrate to best preserve the quality. The subtitles, from the UK DVD, were improved upon. The bonus link is a slideshow comprised of posters, lobby cards and production stills from the film. |
Without Reservations For a completist like me, this is the uncut version of a film not highly regarded by many Wayne fans. Like Angel and the Badman this was converted from the UK DVD with a custom menu, archives providing excellent poster and lobby card material for the graphics work. The UK DVD had no special features, but I added a still gallery, the 1946 Lux Radio Theatre broadcast and a compilation of the deleted scenes. |
The Alamo I decided to use Blu-ray to archive the entire five-sided Restored Original Director’s Cut LaserDisc, which was captured with a high bitrate AVC hardware encoder. Disc segments were seamlessly assembled and edited (using the the TCM broadcast as a benchmark) in Lagarith lossless codec format. The final Lagarith master was encoded to Blu-ray using the x264 AVC codec. Custom letterboxing mattes were added to reduce video noise inherent in the analog source. The 59 chapters match those on the LD. With subtitles turned on, restored scenes or scenes with significant restored footage are noted. |
The Range Feud; Texas Cyclone; Two Fisted Law A compilation of Wayne's three westerns for Columbia Pictures. |
Maker of Men From the official Columbia VHS, encoded using a prosumer JVC deck, output to an external full-frame time base corrector to clean the video signal. |
Central Airport From the made-on-demand Warner Bros. DVD-R, which had a generic menu. A highlight mask was made of a biplane to get away from the usual underlined link. |
I Married a Woman From LaserDisc. Diana Dors will make any DVD menu look good. |
Hell Town From LaserDisc. |
The Black Watch From a French television broadcast. |
Hondo and the Apaches From a TCM broadcast, output from a cable box via S-Video directly to an MPEG encoder. |
Good-bye, My Lady From the made-on-demand Warner Bros. DVD-R. The Italian poster had bad color bleeding so the color was simply removed. |
College Coach From the made-on-demand Warner Bros. DVD-R, which had a generic menu. |
Lawless Range From the official Republic VHS, encoded using a prosumer JVC deck, output to an external full-frame time base corrector to clean the video signal. Also includes the version broadcast on AMC, the nicest print of this title but cut to 46 minutes; from Worldvision Enterprises, Inc., a subsidiary of Spelling Entertainment Group, Inc. (i.e. Republic). |
Winds of the Wasteland From the official Republic VHS, encoded using a prosumer JVC deck, output to an external full-frame time base corrector to clean the video signal. |
Jet Pilot From LaserDisc, the full-frame version (much like Janet Leigh). |
His Private Secretary Green lobby cards formed the basis of this custom menu, the print culled from the Roan Group DVD. |
Salute From a television broadcast. |
Conflict From an eBay purchase. |
A multiple disc collection of the non-modified Lone Star westerns, culled from the best prints in various DVD compilations (Alpha Video, Mill Creek Entertainment, Passport Video and Video Yesteryear). Disc #6 is filled out with Lawless Range and Winds of the Wasteland. |
